The memorable battle of 1971 between India and Pakistan is Known as the India-Pakistan Longewala Battle. The battle happened at the Longelwala post in Jaisalmer on 5 Dec 1971. With a small BSF unit of 6-7 personnel that was accompanied by a 120 men company of the Army’s 23 Punjab regiment. Who Was Bhairon Singh Rathore?

Bhairon Singh was one of the most important parts of that battle as he was considered the Hero of that battle. He showed his bravery in the battle and was portrayed by Suniel Shetty in the film “Border”. He died on 19th December 2022 In AIIMS, Jodhpur at the age of 81.

His son Sawai Singh told that his father’s health was not well from 2 days before the 51st anniversary of the war and on 14th December admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Jodhpur. He also mentioned that his limbs got affected by what seemed like paralysis.

According to the doctors, Bhairon Singh possibly suffered a brain stroke and was in and out of ICU for the past few days. Further, he said that the Rathore family lives in Solankiatala Village which is about 100 KM away from Jodhpur. A BSF spokesperson that his body will be taken to a BSF training center in jodhpur where a wreath-laying ceremony will be held for him. After that, he will be taken for the cremation at his village with full military honors. After the battle, he also received the Sena Medal in 1972 for his gallant action. Bhairon Singh Rathore retired from service as a Naik in 1987.
