Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canberra Raiders, Allan Hawke, died at the age of 74. According to reports, he took his last breath on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. The news has saddened many of his well-wishers and loved ones. Taking to social media, everyone is paying the local icon heartfelt tributes and deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Hawke has held a variety of positions throughout his career, including those of chief of staff to Prime Minister Paul Keating, secretary for three federal government agencies, high commissioner to New Zealand, chancellor of the Australian National University (ANU), and, most recently, chairman of the Canberra Raiders. Hawke stated, “I’ve had a tremendously blessed life, with opportunities to serve Australia’s national interests in ways that I could never have envisaged,” in an interview with “CityNews” in 2020.
Allan, who was born on February 18, 1948, in Canberra, went to Queanbeyan High School and earned a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honors and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University. Paying tribute to Hawke, Raiders CEO Don Furner highlighted his many years of service and contribution. Furner said that Allan led an extraordinary public and private life and that he was on many boards. Adding further, he said that he can say that the Board he loved being on the most was the Canberra Raiders.
Raiders CEO further said that he was still watching them win against Manly on the weekend and was wearing his Raiders jersey in his hospital bed. On behalf of the whole club, they would like to pass on their deep condolences to his wife Maria, daughter Stephanie, his brother Phil, and their extended family. He knows how much care and comfort Maria and Stephanie provided Allan during his health battle and it was fitting that they were by his side when he passed.
Although not much information regarding his death has been shared by his family yet, it is said that he was battling cancer for around three years. Allan was also receiving treatment for the dreaded disease in a reputed hospital. However, no treatment could recover and he succumbed to cancer leaving his family and well-wishers behind.
