According to reports, the nine-year NFL veteran breathed his last on Wednesday in Newport Beach, California. His death was announced by USC on social media and since then tributes have poured in for White in huge amounts. People who loved and admired Charles were saddened, to say the least. Apart from tributes and condolence messages, everyone also wondered about his cause of death and how did he die. Well, it is reported that Charles was battling cancer. Even though he had been undergoing chemotherapy and getting the best medical care, he could not recover and succumbed to the disease at 64 only.
White, a Los Angeles native who played college football at the University of Southern California and was an All-American, won the Heisman Trophy during that time. He was chosen by the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams in the 1980 NFL Draft’s first round, 27th overall, respectively. While attending the University of Southern California, White played football for the USC Trojans.
White received the W.J. Voit Memorial Trophy in 1978 for being the top Pacific Coast college football player. Out of the four players who played in the Rose Bowl, he is the second to win Player of the Game twice. Charles White concluded his career as the second-most prolific rusher in Trojan history and a three-time Heisman Trophy winner for USC. White, who filled in for Ricky Bell, carried for 858 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie campaign.
While leading the Trojans, he led the nation in rushing yards. White led the Trojans in rushing in each of his final three seasons. He also won the Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Pop Warner Awards following his senior year. He won the Rose Bowl MVP title in both of the games in the 1978 and 1979 seasons.
