On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, the Head of Shas’ Council of Torah Sages, Rabbi Shimon Baadani died. He was 94 at the time of his passing. According to reports, Rabbi Shimon died today and left his loved ones and well-wishers in profound grief. His unfortunate death has become a subject of interest among everyone. People are mourning his death and are sharing emotional posts on social media where they have paid their sincere and deepest tributes to the man and extended their sincere condolences and thoughts to his family as they are going through a very hard time. Who Was Shimon Badani?
Born in 1928 in Palestine, Shimon was a leading Sephardi rabbi and Rosh Kollel leader in Israel. He served as president of numerous Torah institutions and was a co-founder and dean of Kollel Torah V’Chaim in Bnei Brak. He was also a prominent member of the Moetzet Chachmei HaTorah rabbinical leadership council of the Shas political party. His parents initially enrolled Baadani in a Mafdal (Religious Zionist) institution where he received a religious education.
After that, Baadani transferred to the Beis Yosef-Novardok yeshiva in Jerusalem, where Rabbi Elazar Shach was acting as rosh yeshiva and continued his studies there. Baadani was renowned for his unassuming personality and way of living. In the domain of Shidduchim, he was successful among the marriages he recommended are those of Torah authorities, particularly Rishon Letzion Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron.
Baadani had seven kids with Shulamit Abadai, his wife. His sons are Rabbi Moshe Baadani, a rosh chaburah in the kollel, Rabbi David Yeshaya Baadani, the rosh kollel of Kollel Taharot in Jerusalem, and Rabbi Chaim Baadani, the head of Torah V’Chaim institutions.
