Charles Newby who was born on 18 June 1941 and passed away on 22 May 2023 was a British musician who was briefly the bassist for the Beatles for several gigs in December 1960 while Stuart Sutcliffe was still in Hamburg focused on his art career.
The Beatles need a bass guitarist when they returned from West Germany for the first time they were in need of a bass guitarist. Pete Best suggested Chas Newby had been with the Black Jacks and was now attending university so he agreed to play with the Beatles.
Charles Newby taught mathematics at Droitwich Spa High School in Drowitch Spa and most recently lived in Alcester where he played in a charity group THE RACKETS. Newby had been performing as a member of the Quarrymen the band that was the precursor to the Beatles.
Newby appeared with the Beatles for our engagements in December 1960 17 December, Cash Club, Liverpool on 24 December, Grosvenor Ballroom, Liscard on 27 December, Litherland Town Hall on 31 December, Casbah Club). John Lennon asked him to go to West Germany for the Beatles’ second trip, but Newby chose to return to university. After Lennon and George Harrison both declined to switch to bass guitar, Paul McCartney, who previously played guitar and piano, reluctantly became the band’s bass player.
The member of the Beatles who is drummer Roag Best confirmed his death and said Both Pete and I and the whole Best family were absolutely devastated to hear the very sad news with regards to one of the family’s closest friends Chas Newby passing last night. Many of you will know him for playing bass guitar for both The Beatles and The Quarrymen, but to us he was laid back Chas with a big smile. We’ll truly miss him. Forever in our thoughts.
