The former director of the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), Uma Shankar Mishra has shockingly passed away. As per sources, Uma Shankar took his last breath at a private hospital located in New Delhi on August 26, 2021. It has also come forward that the ex-director was getting treatment at the said hospital for the past few days while his health kept getting deteriorated. Though the medical staff attempted their best to treat him, he couldn’t get saved and left a mourning world behind. However, the cause of death has not gotten revealed yet.
Uma Shankar was a 1968-batch IPS officer of Odisha Cadre. He had proved himself as a highly decorated officer by extraditing the escapee Abu Salem. The underworld don, Abu Salem was reportedly wanted for his involvement in Mumbai bomb blasts that took place in March 1993. It was reported that the gangster played an active role in these blasts that killed as many as 250 people. Abu Salem was announced as a fugitive as he had fleed to Portugal. However, in November 2005, Uma Shankar Mishra arrested him. Mishra served in CBI from 6th December 2003 to 6th December 2005 and established himself as a notable officer.
Expressing his grief on Uma Shankar’s unfortunate demise, director-general of police, Abhay posted a lengthy tweet. He mourned the death of the former director and a retired IPS officer. The director-general further wrote that Uma Shankar will always be remembered for his immense contribution to Indian law and for his humility, professional excellence, compassion and integrity. He conveyed his condolences to Mr Shankar’s family and prayed for his soul either. Besides, Baijayanti Panda, national vice-president of BJP also mourned Uma Shankar’s death. The Governor of Odisha, Ganeshi Lal shared his sadness on his demise as well.
However, it is being said that Uma Shankar had been suffering from old-age ailments and for the treatment of the same, he was admitted to Delhi’s hospital. Though, despite getting treatment, Mishra couldn’t survive and died on 26th August this year. At the time of his death, Uma Shankar Mishra was 77-years-old. The official website of CBI has also paid tribute to the former director as he was the only Odia to hold the top post as he served as the IPS officer in Odisha Cadre in 1968-batch.
