Vishu is celebrated every year on 14th April as the New Year in Kerala. As per the Astrology, It’s the day when the zodiac changes that is when the Sun enters the Ashwini nakshatra. This day is the beginning of the New Year for Keralites. Actually, this is one of the popular festivals celebrated grandly in entire South India.
Vishu as the name is implying, the festival is related to Sun-Vishnu but apart from Lord Vishnu, the festival is also related to Ravana. The New Year in South India is celebrated often as Vishu Parv. People in Kerala put new clothes to Lord Krishana along with gold ornaments. Then Puja takes place with mirrors, jackfruit, cucumbers, oranges, grapes, Ramayana at 12 in the night. All this part of Puja is known as Vishu Kani.

People thank God and pray for themselves on this day for a happy and prosperous life ahead. Little ones get money from the elders of the family. A visit to the temple is like a compulsion to see Lord Krishna. “Hare Ram Hare Ram, Ram Ram Hare Hare! Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare!!” the chanting for the day. Lord Krishna is served with 26 types of food in a special thali called Urali.

Apart from the fruits, the grains comprising Urali are coconut, pumpkin, raw banana, pineapple, betel nut, and rice. Since it’s the lockdown period, just like other festivals, this festival won’t be celebrated this year.
One more thing, what happens when the sun enters the Ashwini nakshatra? That time the sun rays directly fall on Lord Shrihari. This is the only reason that people in Kerala celebrate the day as New Year. Also, this is the same time when Lord Krishna acquired victory over Narakasura and killed him. Henceforth, Lord Vishnu and his avatar Kanha, both are worshipped on this day.
