It is coming forward that Sonny Thomas Almanza was arrested on Sunday night. As mentioned, he was detained by the authorities in connection with the fatal shooting that claimed the life of a police officer. Reportedly, Vakoff and another officer responded to unrest that spread on a street outside the residential area when the frightening incident happened took place. Let us add that with that shooting, Vakoff has become the second officer to be killed in the line of duty in two years.
Almanza was recovering from injuries sustained in a shootout with Cody and another officer. According to the police, Vakov and his team were sent to check on the health of two minor children when they came into contact with the sickness. According to Police Chief Link Strate, who spoke at a press conference on Sunday, police opened fire after a suspect shot and injured a woman. Then, according to Strate, the suspect shot Vakoff.
Police injured the suspect, who were then sent to a nearby hospital. The woman, who the suspect is accused of injuring, was also transported to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to the police. According to authorities, Almanza was detained on suspicion of first-degree murder, ex-offender weapon possession, and two counts of child molesting. The department stated its investigation was underway but did not provide any additional information.
According to court documents, Almanza admitted guilt to one count of assault with a deadly weapon in 2008, which resulted in aggravated attacks in the nearby county of Adams. Instead of receiving a 15-year conditional adult jail sentence, he received a six-year juvenile sentence. Vakov was the second police officer to pass away in the line of duty in the town of Arvada, which is located 7 miles northwest of downtown Denver.
Police Officer Gordon Beasley, 40, was assassinated in 2021 in downtown Arvada by a shooter wielding an AR rifle. Locals devastated by Wakov’s murder decorated a police cruiser with flowers that were parked in front of Arvada’s city hall, and the city overnight lit up a historic downtown water tower blue.
