Who Was Jim Kolbe?

Born on June 28, 1942, in Evanston, Illinois, United States, James Thomas Kolbe was an American businessman and politician. He served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives. From 1985 to 2003, he represented Arizona’s 5th congressional district and its 8th congressional district from 2003 to 2007. In 1996, the politician came out as gay after voting in support of the Defense of Marriage Act.

Kolbe worked for Democratic President Barack Obama on the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations after leaving Congress. Following the victory of Donald Trump in 2018, Kolbe defected from the Republican party and declared himself an independent. He supported Joe Biden for president in the 2020 election. He went to Patagonia Elementary School and Patagonia Union High School, but after three years working as Barry Goldwater’s United States Senate Page, he graduated from the United States Capitol Page School in 1960.

He finished his undergraduate studies at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and Northwestern University in Evanston, where he was a member of the fraternity Acacia.
