A shocking piece of news is coming to the front where it is reported that a rare brown bear has died. Italians are grieving the death of the bear and the news has surafced all over the internet. It is reported that the bear became famous for his januts to small mountain villages in the Abruzzo region. The bear was affectionately known as Juan Carrito. Sources confirm that the bear was killed after being hit by a car. The tragic accident happened on Monday afternoon, January 23, 2023, in the town of Castel di Sangro. Check further details here.
The regional president, Marco Marsilio, expressed his sadness at learning of Juan Carrito’s passing: “He was the most well-known and adored Marsican bear in Abruzzo. The entire world, who learned about Abruzzo and the beauty of bears through the numerous films of Carrito when he was a youngster, is saddened by his passing. After two failed attempts to rewild him, Carrito became well known for his excursions into populated areas, visits that grew ever more bold.
Who Was Italian Bear Juan Carrito
He thought the ski resort of Roccaraso, where he gobbled a batch of recently baked cookies after breaking into a bakery in late 2021, to be “home.” In the village, Carrito was also seen drinking from a fountain. He would frequently spend the night there, sleeping under a canopy of pine trees, before going in quest of food, rooting through refrigerators and eating leftover pizza and sandwiches. The bear was seized after the biscuit robbery and sent to a wilderness region in the highlands, but he later came back, prompting a second capture in March of last year and some time spent in a cage.
The attempt to rewild him was likewise unsuccessful, so Carrito went back to Roccaraso, where he had been spotted earlier this month skiing. Being one of four cubs born to a bear named Amarena may have contributed to Carrito’s sociability. Given the rarity of the occasion, Marsican women typically give birth to one to three cubs, the family received a lot of media attention. The name Carrito refers to one of the first towns where Amarena and her cubs debuted.
Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise are all bordered by the Apennine Mountains, where the Marsican subspecies of brown bears can be found. Over the past 20 years, their population in the region has decreased to about 50, which is assumed to be the result of unlawful hunting or the animals being hit by cars.
