We are deeply saddened to report the unfortunate death of Jolidee Matongo. The South African politician has taken his last breath and left the world. Reports are coming that Matongo met with a tragic car accident that resulted in his sudden death. He was only 46 at the time of his demise. Jolidee had accompanied president Cyril Ramaphosa in Soweto on Saturday, 18th September 2021. As the municipal elections were nearing, he had gone there to campaign for the ANC. Unfortunately, the politician died after getting involved in a fatal car accident.
Jolidee Matongo was recently appointed as the mayor of Johannesburg on 10th August 2021. He could only serve till 18th September, as he passed away. South African’s president Cyril Ramaphosa had condoled Matongo’s death. As he was with him, Ramaphosa stated that it’s really difficult to comprehend the tragedy. The president added that it’s absolutely saddening to recall how Mayor Matongo interacted with him and other residents of Soweto with passion before he bid adieu to the world. Cyril further stated that Matongo’s death has deprived the nation’s economic centre and nothing could prepare them for the sudden loss.
The 46-years-old Matongo was totally immersed in creating opportunities for the residents of Johannesburg and in improving conditions, said Ramaphosa. The president added that just like everyone else Mayor was also looking forward to the upcoming elections and was putting his heart and soul into assembling the people of Johannesburg so that their voices can be heard on November 1st. Several news sources also confirmed Jolidee’s sudden demise. However, how did the accident happen is not disclosed yet. Undoubtedly, it’s very devastating to learn about Matongo’s death who was just two months in his new position. Apart from president Ramphosa, many people are expressing their sadness and paying Matongo a tribute.
Belonging to the political party African National Congress, Jolidee Matongo had served as a member of the MMC (mayoral committee for finance) before getting elected as the Mayor of Johannesburg. Matongo got involved in politics at the young age of 13 where he was a member of the Soweto Student Congress. Later, he also became a member of COSAS which stands for South African Students. After some time, he was made the regional head of communications of ANC for consecutive eight years. After Geoff Makhubo passed away battling an ongoing virus in July 2021, Jolidee Matongo was elected mayor on 10th August 2021. May his soul rest in peace!
