He won six all-around world championships and two bull riding world championships in the Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit at the National Finals Rodeo. The Prorodeo Hall of Fame inducted him in 1979 in the all-around category. It also inducted him as a Legend of PRoRodeo in 2010.
Larry Mahan was raised in Salem, Oregon. He started competing in professional rodeo at the age of 14. He competed in the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) beginning in 1963. He won the Academy Award for Documentary Feature for the documentary The Great American Cowboy in 1973. He was the first to contest three National Rodeo events in one year. Larry Mahan won the World Bull Riding Champion in 1965 and 1967. He bought Ranch near Phoenix, Arizona after retiring from rodeo in 1977 and he had his own brand of western clothing which he build-up by running a few schools himself. Larry was a versatile person he also worked as an actor in The Honkers, Six Pack Annie. Larry Mahan co-starred in the 1995 Tv movie The Good Old Boys also.
