The renowned Jamaican bassist Robbie Shakespeare has sadly passed away at the age of 68. It is coming forward that recently, he had undergone surgery related to his kidneys and that he had been ailing for quite some time. Robbie was reportedly admitted to a Florida hospital where his surgery was performed. However, the bassist couldn’t get saved and died on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. According to a list issued by Rolling Stone magazine, Robbie Shakespeare was one of the 17th greatest bassists of all time and he brought the music genre into new territory.
After the saddening news of Robbie Shakespeare’s passing announcement, Andrew Holness, Jamaican Prime Minister, took to Twitter and shared an emotional post. He wrote that when it comes to reggae bass playing, no one can come even near in having the influence and power of Robbie. The PM added that the Jamaican artist will always be remembered for his exceptional contribution to the music industry and the country’s culture. Andrew Holness offered condolences to Robbie’s family, fans, and friends. Holness wrote in another tweet that the legendary bassist played a significant role in not just recording but producing albums.

David Rodigan, the British DJ. wrote on Twitter the bass is everything in Reggae music and Robbie happened to have such skills that he played his bass guitar like no one else. The DJ added that the artist’s passing is a tragic loss to the entire music industry and that his contribution was immeasurable. Celebrities like Eric Alper, Hon. Olivia Grange and Wayne Chen paid the 68-year-old a heartfelt tribute on their respective social media and expressed their sadness on his untimely and unfortunate demise.
Talking about Robbie Shakespeare, he was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on September 27, 1953. He was best known for being a part of Sly and Robbie. Robbie was considered one of the most loved and influential reggae bassists. Besides, Robbie was also popularly known for his creativity in electronics and production effects. Sometimes, he was known as “Basspeare”. He worked with various artists while being a part of Sly and Robbie that include U-Roy, Bunny Wailer, Sugar Minott, Augustus Pablo, Black Uhuru, Gregory Issacs, and Yellowman.
