Basically, An earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another. The surface where they slip is called the fault or fault plane. While most earthquakes are caused by the slipping of tectonic plates, minor earthquakes can also be caused by volcanic eruptions, the collapse of rock formations on Earth’s surface, or underground explosions. The Richter scale measures the largest wiggle on the recording, but other magnitude scales measure different parts of the earthquake. It uses a formula based on the amplitude of the largest wave recorded on a specific type of seismometer and the distance between the earthquake and the seismometer.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Mizoram and Campbell Bay in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were hit by two earthquakes on Monday. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale hit Campbell Bay while Mizoram was hit by an earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale. The depth of the earthquake in Campbell Bay was 32 km below the ground. In Mizoram, the depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the ground. NCS also tweeted that “Earthquake of magnitude: 4.6, Occured on 10th April 2023, 02:26:02 IST, Lat: 8.98 and Long: 94.07, Depth: 32 km, Location: 220 km North of Camp Bell, Nicobar Island.

Two Earthquakes of Magnitude

We can significantly mitigate their effects by identifying hazards and building safer structures. By preparing for natural earthquakes we can also reduce the risk of human-induced earthquakes. Stay away from outer walls, windows, fireplaces, and hanging objects. If you are unable to move from a bed or chair, protect yourself from falling objects by covering them up with blankets and pillows. If you are outside, go to an open area away from trees, telephone poles, and buildings, and stay there.

Why is an earthquake dangerous? Over the centuries, earthquakes have been responsible for millions of deaths and an incalculable amount of damage to property. Depending on their intensity, earthquakes can cause much harm to the infrastructure, and trigger landslides, tsunamis, and volcanoes. Very great earthquakes occur on average about once per year. According to the sources, No casualties or property damage was reported due to the earthquakes at Andaman and Nicobar Island. We tried our best to explain this news.
