According to reports, Avalon Hagerman has been named one of five finalists in a North American competition to make a prom outfit out of duct tape. Sources claim that the Kitchener, Ont. teen took around 157 hours to complete her dress. However, it was all worth it in the end as her hard work paid off. Sharing her excitement, Avalon stated that she pulled a couple of all-nighters to get the work done, and even though she was a little tired, she was super proud of what she made. The 19-years-old is among the 10 finalists by the contest’s judges and is also the only Canadian finalist who has been featured in the duct tape prom dress category. As mentioned, it took her 157 hours to create a prom dress that was entirely made of duct tape. She reportedly used 25 rolls of duct tape to create the prom dress. Its matching accessories for a Duck Brand’s 2022 ‘stuck-at-prom’ contest.
Let us add that the contest winner will take home a $10,000 cash college scholarship. On her achievement, Hagerman’s father said that the finished product was just breathtaking. Avalon Hagerman stated that everybody is so talented and added that to be chosen to be one of the tops, she was pretty proud. The young girl continued that the scholarship would be helpful as she is preparing to study at the University of Toronto in the humanitarian program.
Talking about the dress, she said that it was made out of her love for art. The teenager also went on to talk about her inspiration to create the dress in the first place. She stated that she used her anxious thoughts about going to university and moving away from home. Hagerman continued to say that while designing the dress, she was super excited and could not wait to start it. She added that she has never used duct tape before and using it was a little difficult for her.
Avalon stated that she used different elements like the swirls and chokers that show feelings of anxiety but also chose flowers to show personal growth. Her main goal through this entire process is to convey hope through her dress and continue designing as a hobby.
