After attaining her degree in Ph.D., Arati moved to Washington DC and joined the office of Technology Assessment as a congress member. She served from 1984 to 1986, later she started working for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and performed her duty from 1986 to 1993. She labored as a program manager at the time she initially joined the department. Later she was appointed as the first director of the Microelectronics Technology Office.

She became the administrator of the National Institute of Standard and Technology at the age of 34 and she aided the institute as a director from 1993 to 1997. She was then selected as the senior vice president and chief technology officer at Raychem she held the post for a year from 1997 to 1998. She joined the post after getting retired from NIST. After leaving her post as a vice president at Raychem joined as an Interval Researcher’s Vice President and subsequently president. In the year 2001, she worked with the association of U.S Venture Partners, wherein she delicately supervised funding information technology and some other green technology organizations.
