The body of 27-year-old Kathryn Muhlbach was found on the afternoon of December 9. Jose Antonio Caraballo, 43, was later identified by Portland police as the main suspect in the murder of Muhlbach. A nationwide arrest warrant for second-degree murder (domestic violence) was issued for Caraballo in the days that followed. At the time of the search, Caraballo was known to have contacts in Oregon, California, and Mexico, according to investigators.
Caraballo, however, was captured on December 23 in Southern Oregon and taken to the Jackson County Jail. Caraballo would eventually be relocated to Multnomah County. According to a news release from the Portland Police Bureau, officers from the East Precinct responded to a report of a body being found in Powell Butte Nature Park, which is located in the 16000 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard in Portland, at around 3:16 p.m. on December 9.
First responders arrived on the scene and located a female adult victim, who was later identified as Muhlbach. She was declared dead on the spot. Due to the “strange circumstances” surrounding the victim’s death, investigators from the Portland Police Homicide Unit were called to the scene and given control of the investigation. The medical examiner’s office’s examination, according to the announcement, established that Muhlbach’s death was a homicide and that “homicidal violence” was the cause of death.
Officials withheld information about Muhlbach’s injuries, the position of her body in the park, and the identity of the person who discovered her body and called the police. Police said that when Muhlbach passed away, Caraballo allegedly departed the Portland area. Although his last known address was inside the city limits of Portland, investigators claim that he is known to have friends in other parts of Oregon as well as California and Mexico.
