Sanket Sargar has taken the internet by storm after bagging a silver medal in the 55-kg men’s weightlifting category. It was India’s first medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games. With that, Sanket has also become the first Indian to claim a medal at the Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham. He grabbed a silver medal in weightlifting on the second day of the quadrennial event. Due to this reason, his name has occupied all the top trends on the internet as everyone is congratulating him and praising him for the extreme courage that he displayed at the event.
According to the reports, Sanket Sargar lifted a total of 248 kg (113 in the snatch, 135 in clean and jerk) to win the silver medal. Let us add that he finished just 1 kg short of the eventual gold medalist Aniq Kasdan of Malaysia. The 21-year-old Indian lifter gave himself a bright start in the snatch category where he lifted 113 kg, six kg more than Kasdan. However, the 20-year-old Kasdan made a stronger comeback by lifting 142kg, seven more than Sanket. Aniq Kasdan was the favorite since the start of the event as he was the No. 1 in the CWG ranking.
Who Is Sanket Sargar?
Bon on October 16, 2000, in the town of Sangli, Maharashtra, Sanket Mahadev Sargar struggled to find a job. His father runs a Paan shop and food stall and manages to meet ends meet. According to Sanket’s childhood coach Mayur Sinhasane, the 21-year-old used to wake up early in the morning. He helped his father at his store and then went for training at the gym. Sinhasane stated that Sanket sacrificed his entire childhood as he woke up around 5:30 AM to prepare tea for customers and go to the gym later in the evening.
The coach further said that he had only one dream and that was to bring laurels to the country in weightlifting and give a good life to his family. His dream seems to be coming true now. It was also revealed that Sanket has been trying to fulfill his father’s incomplete dream to be a weightlifter. Before Sanket was picked for the national team, the Sargar family went through some tough times. He reportedly did not have a sponsor and that his father took full care of his diet and exercise.
